SOME of the biggest names in mixed martial arts will be passing on their moves to the next generation this weekend.

Student Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fans in Glasgow will be given the chance to train with some of the sports biggest stars.

The MMA will be hosting its first live event in Scotland this Saturday in front of a sell-out crowd at the Hydro.

And to celebrate, four of the world’s best UFC athletes, including Cub Swanson and Clay Guida, will be hosting a one off training session in Glasgow exclusively for Scottish students.

And as a taster, a group of the world ‘s top exponents, including Jimmie Rivera, Chris de la Rocha, Paul Redmond (IRE), Hans Stringer (NL), Mickael Lebout, Vaughan Lee and Leonadro Mafra were in the Old Fruitmarket yesterday to show what is in store for them.

Up to 100 people are expected to take part in the seminar, which will showcase some of the training needed in the sport of MMA.

Many of the students involved will already be training in judo, wrestling, karate or taekwondo.

This session will be a chance for students to see first-hand the level of training that goes into becoming a professional mixed martial artist.

It will combine boxing, wrestling, judo and grappling.

Leading it will be octagon favourites Cub and Clay who are ready to put the participants through their paces and give them a glimpse into what it takes to be a UFC athlete.

This will be the first time students in Scotland have ever been given the opportunity to train alongside world class MMA athletes.

UFC is currently experiencing a rise in popularity throughout the UK thanks in no small part to stars such as controversial fighting Irishman Conor McGregor.

Dubliner Conor McGregor brought UFC into the mainstream on Saturday night with a convincing win over American Chad Mendes in Las Vegas.

The fight was beamed to millions of televisions worldwide and took place at the MGM grand arena in front of a sell out crowd that included stars such as former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson and Barcelona’s Brazilian superstar Neymar.

At the UFC fight night in Glasgow they will be looking to put on an equally good show and capitalise on the sports growing popularity.

The main event will see English fighter Michael Bisping take on Brazilian Thales Leites in a five round middleweight bout.

English fighter Michael Bisping is headlining the Scottish show, his first bout in the UK in five years.

He said: “It’s been five years too long, this is where I forged my career. It’s been fantastic travelling the world doing what I love but this will be special.

“It might be Scotland but I can drive to where I grew up in two and a half hours from Glasgow so I hope I can get some support.

“I did a signing here a few years ago and the turnout was incredible so I’m thrilled to be here and can’t wait for the fight.”
