A MAN has been arrested after allegedly buying alcohol for two children.

The 37-year-old was arrested after he was alleged to have purchased booze for two 14-year-olds in East Kilbride.

He was nicked by officers during a crackdown on adults who buy alcohol for underage kids.

Police hope the blitz will help cut booze-fuelled disorder.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "In East Kilbride, a 37-year-old male who had purchased alcohol for two children aged 14.

"Through this initiative we want to make people aware that there are serious penalties if they are caught buying alcohol for children.

"These so called 'proxy sales' can attract a maximum fine of up to £5000 if offenders are convicted at court.

"Not only does this encourage under age drinking, it causes youth disorder and violence in your community."

More than 25 people in Lanarkshire have been reported to the procurator fiscal for the offence during the past three months.
