Politicians have rallied behind Andy Murray’s call for Great Britain’s Davis Cup semi-final matches to be played in Glasgow.

Speaking after securing a 3-1 quarter-final victory over France at Queen’s Club on Sunday, the tennis ace said the city “deserves it”.

He talked up the Emirates Arena where he said the crowd created an “incredible” atmosphere during the team’s tie against the USA in March.

Great Britain will play Australia in September in the side’s first Davis Cup semi-final since 1981 – but the venue is yet to be chosen by the Lawn Tennis Association, the national governing body of tennis in Great Britain.

The SNP’s Spokesman for Culture, Media and Sport at Westminster, John Nicolson MP, said: “I'm delighted to support Andy Murray's bid to have Glasgow host the Davis Cup. Andy is Scotland's home grown sporting hero and an inspiration to millions. With world class facilities, Glasgow would be the perfect location for the tournament.”

SNP MP for Glasgow East, Natalie McGarry, also gave her backing to the idea.

“Like Andy, I would love to see the semi-finals come to Glasgow – when the tournament was last in the city in March the atmosphere was electric, and it’s an experience I am sure Glasgow’s tennis fans are keen to repeat,” she said. “As ever, people in Glasgow and all across Scotland will be backing Andy all the way, and I very much hope his calls for the semis to be held in Glasgow are heeded.”

Eastwood MSP Ken Macintosh, who is running to be leader of Scottish Labour, described moves to bring the Davis Cup semi-final to Glasgow is a “great idea”.

He said: “I’d already seen the team twice at Braehead and knew how enjoyable the Davis Cup can be, but when my oldest daughter was selected as a ball girl at the Emirates in March that was the icing on the cake. You can bet your life she’ll be applying to do so again against the Australians.

“I can genuinely say the Davis Cup matches in Glasgow have been amongst the best sporting events I have ever attended and half of that is because of the crowd.

“If Andy pulls this off, I can guarantee we’ll be queuing for tickets to cheer the team on.”

East end councillor, George Redmond, who has the Emirates Arena in his Calton ward, said he “agrees with Andy Murray that the Emirates is the right venue to inspire Team GB to the Davis Cup Final”.

“In March this year the Glasgow supporters roared Team GB to victory against the USA and with a world class support in a world class venue then there will be no stopping Andy and Team GB against Australia in September,” added Councillor Redmond.

The world number three broke down after battling through a difficult match on Sunday against Gilles Simon.

His hard-fought 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory earned the winning point in Britain’s 3-1 defeat of France and secured the team’s semi-final place against Australia.

Speaking after the match, the Wimbledon winner said: “When we played in Glasgow this year the atmosphere was incredible. You could say they deserve it (the semi-final) because of how great a job they did there.

“I think they lifted everyone. I mean Wardy (James Ward] played a great match there against John Isner. Dom (Inglot) and Jamie (Murray) were fantastic in the doubles against the Bryans and the crowd got right into it as well. It was a good venue.

“But the memories that you have from those matches, I’m sure the whole team would agree the atmosphere was absolutely unbelievably there. You don’t get that in any other event, so you have a lot of memories from the Davis Cup and that’s one of the reasons you’re passionate to play.”

A spokesman for Glasgow Life, the organisation which manages the Emirates, said: “The Arena is available on the dates of the Davis Cup semi-final tie with Australia. We would of course be happy to have discussions with the LTA around this.”

A spokesman for the LTA said: “We are considering a number of venue options for the semi-final tie against Australia and we plan to announce in early August.”
