CRUEL conmen who prey on frail old ladies are being hunted by police in Glasgow.

The sly fraudsters tricked their way into pensioners' homes and robbed victims aged between 69 and 89 during the crime spree.

The two men, who pose as council workers, have targeted five elderly women in a matter of weeks.

Police described the crimes as "despicable" and believe the same men are responsible for all five incidents.

Vulnerable pensioners were today warned to be on their guard against the duo after a spate of cruel thefts in Knightswood.

Detective Constable Scott Brokie, who is leading the hunt for the conmen, said: "These two men are preying on elderly people in their own homes.

"Their actions are despicable and it’s totally unacceptable to leave elderly people feeling unsafe within their own homes.

"It’s imperative we find them and arrest them.

"Be assured we are working to identify these men who we believe are responsible for the recent incidents."

The latest incident took place at around 3pm last Friday.

An 82-year-old woman was targeted at her home in Kirkton Avenue, when a man, claiming to be from Glasgow City Council, asked to carry out repair work on her garden fence.

As he did this, another man entered the house and stole the elderly woman's money and some belongings.

Another incident took place in Harefield Drive at around 3pm on June 22.

On this occasion, the victim asked the depraved crooks to leave.

A short time later, two men approached a 69-year-old woman in Great Western Road.

One suspect discussed garden work with her, while a second man stole cash from her home.

At around 2pm, on the same sad, the conmen targeted an 89-year-old woman at a property in Alderman Road.

The brave lady managed to foil their attempts to steal from her.

Just days earlier, an 89-year-old woman from Boreland Drive, lost cash in a similar deception.

One suspect is described as white, between 30 and 40-years-old, who speaks with a ‘polite Glasgow accent’.

He wears smart casual clothes, normally a dark coloured top and jeans or dress trousers.

His accomplice is also described as white and aged between 25 and 30-years-old.

He also wears a dark coloured top and jeans or dress trousers.

Police also believed there may be other victims who have yet to come forward.

DC Brokie added: "I would urge anyone in the areas where these incidents took place and who may have seen something untoward or suspicious to get in touch with us.

"It may be that there are other people in the area who have been approached by these men who haven’t reported the matter to police.

"If you have had someone at your door recently that you were unsure of, or if an elderly relative has informed you of an incident, I would like to hear from you.

"I would ask anyone who recognises the description, or who can assist police in making an identification to contact us."

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "When carrying out assisted house garden maintenance Glasgow City Council staff will always be wearing corporately badged uniforms and using council vehicles.

"If in doubt homeowners can call 0141 287 5064 to confirm the presence and identity of the officers."

Anyone with information is asked to call Drumchapel Police Office on 101.
