TOM TAIT, Mayor of Gold Coast

OUR city has just marked its 1000th day celebrations as we count down to hosting the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. As Mayor, I am confident preparations for our city to take over the Games baton from Glasgow are on track.

We have some big shoes to fill given the incredible Games experience your city put on in 2014.

The catch-phrase ‘People Make Glasgow’ has stuck with me for quite some time, proving a constant reminder that an event of such magnitude as the Games requires the full support of the community to make it a magical experience.

We’ve already had a lot of support from your city, so much so that the people of Glasgow are helping make Gold Coast’s Games a success too.

That’s why this summer I have returned to Glasgow on a self-funded visit as I am keen to continue to learn about the legacy of your Games.

The legacy outcomes we hope to achieve include improved transport solutions; greater uptake of people using public transport; an increase in community pride and volunteering, improved sporting infrastructure; and greater international recognition for our city as a place to live, play and invest.

; and greater social inclusion for our residents, particularly our seniors.
