A BRIDE spent her wedding day in the back of a police car after her bridal motor broke down and she had to hitch a lift from a local cop, reports Rebecca Robertson.

Stephanie Ritchie, from Paisley, was on her way to her wedding reception in Cumnock, Ayrshire, when disaster struck and the car broke down.

She was stranded at the side of the road with her new husband on the happiest day of their lives.

But, fortunately for the couple, PC Lynsey Arthur came to the rescue.

The kind-hearted officer drove the bride and groom to the Lochside House Hotel in the back of her police car.

Bride Stephanie described PC Arthur as “an absolute credit to the Ayrshire Police Division”.

She added: "I think it was fate that she drove by at that moment."

Stunned guests looked on as the newlyweds arrived at the reception in the squad car.

PC Arthur said: "It was an absolute pleasure to assist a lovely couple on the most important day of their lives.”

Wedding photographer, Tracey McQuillan, said PC Arthur posed for a quick photo and then went back on patrol.

Ms McQuillan added: "I hope it made her day as much as it made the bride and groom's."

The couple had been engaged since October 2013.
