AN appeal for old photos of the Gorbals has been launched by Glasgow residents creating a new heritage walking app.

Volunteers are working with Future City Glasgow and New Gorbals Housing Association to create the app highlighting the history of the Gorbals, its changing face over the decades and the historic gems which can still be seen in the area.

Based in Gorbals Library, the community group is collecting information on the area’s historic buildings and local landmarks for inclusion in a new app being created with the help of the Future City team.

Now they are appealing for more people to join the group, share memories of the area and dig out any old Gorbals photos which they may have in their attics or albums.

The project aims to use new technology to preserve memories of old Gorbals landmarks like the Coliseum, the Palace Theatre and the United Co-operative Baking Society in McNeil Street for future generations to enjoy.

Scaffolding manager, Peter Mortimer, 59, said everyone with a Gorbals connection, should get involved – even if they are unsure how to use apps.

Peter, who now lives in Garrowhill, said: “I was born in the Gorbals and have a strong affinity with the area but I’m an IT dinosaur - I can send an email but that’s about it.

"But I love this project, I know apps are rapidly replacing guidebooks and I’m looking forward to learning more IT skills. I’m also meeting new people with a common interest in the Gorbals which is great.

"I’d urge anyone with old photos of the area to bring them along to the library as there’s a chance they could be used in the app.”

Humiun Miah of Future City Glasgow is leading the Gorbals app project.

He said: “ The Gorbals Walking app has captured the imagination of Glasgow people who have fond memories of the area and its rich history.

"Local knowledge from those who know the area best is essential to make the app a success and I’m sure many people have fascinating old photos tucked away at home which they might like to share with others.

"This is a chance to share stories and learn new skills promoting the heritage of the Gorbals and highlighting what is great about the area – both now and in the past.”

Future City Glasgow is demonstrating how technology can be used to enrich life in the city making it safer, smarter and more sustainable. The new Gorbals Walking App is just one of a huge range of projects which form part of the programme.

The Gorbals Walking App community group meets every second Tuesday from 5.30pm to 7pm in Gorbals Library onCrown Street.
