GLASGOW could mark its wettest July on record after being hit by nearly six inches of rainfall.

Met Office forecasters said they had recorded 147.6mm - about 5.8in - so far this month at their Bishopton station.

And with the remaining days set to be a mixture of dry spells and showers, there is still no sign of summer for residents in Glasgow and the west of Scotland.

In 2012, 163.6mm - about 6.4in - of rain fell in Glasgow in July, making it the wettest since Met Office records began at Bishopton in 1998.

Paul Arbuckle, Met Office forecaster, said there was about a 30% chance that the rainfall could top that this year.

He said: “I would say it’s maybe projected to be 155mm but you never know, there’s probably about a 30% chance that there will be more rain than 2012.

“We’ll know nearer the time.

“It depends on how heavy the rain is during the showers and heavier rainfall in the next few days.”

Mr Arbuckle said temperatures were similar to mid-autumn rather than summer.

Yesterday the highest temperature recorded was 13C.

But forecasters say it is likely to be more pleasant today and tomorrow, with temperatures reaching 18C.

However, there could be some showers later today and unsettled weather is forecast to return on Friday - the last day of the month.

Mr Arbuckle said it was difficult to see if there was a sunnier outlook ahead because the weather is so unsettled.

He said: "There doesn't seem to be any prolonged periods of high pressure so it's hard to know if there will be some pleasant weather ahead.

"We are experiencing autumnal temperatures so it doesn't look good."

Meanwhile, holidaymakers heading south for a break from the July weather faced warnings about strong winds.

Gales of more than 50mph were predicted for some coastal areas of Britain until the weekend.
