G51 Free Parking Group will hold a public meeting tonight to discuss council plans to turn Govan into a controlled parking zone (CPZ).

Scottish government minister Humza Yousaf, local MSP Johann Lamont, MP Chris Stephens and three Govan councillors are expected to attend.

The controversial proposal will force people who live near the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to pay £50 a year for permits.

There are also plans for business permits which cost £700 a year, visitor parking permits costing £2 for six hours and pay and display meters which will charge motorists 20p for the first 30 minutes and then 20p for every 10 minutes up to a maximum of three hours.

The council insists that, without effective regulation, the streets surrounding the new £842million hospital would become a “car park” for staff and visitors.

Almost 4000 people objected to the controlled parking zone (CPZ) when a consultation was carried out by the council.

The G51 Free Parking Group’s public meeting will be held at 7pm in Fairfield Working Men's Club, 211 Crossloan Rd, Glasgow G51 3QD.
