THOUSANDS of Glasgow pupils are preparing for the end of an anxious wait as exam results day looms.

More than 147,000 pupils in Scotland will be poised to find out how they fared in their Higher and National 4 and 5 qualifications tomorrow.

And 11,844 of these will be Glasgow students in S4 to S6 waiting for the results of 136,825 examinations.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is urging young people who have not fared as well as they might have hoped to give them a call.

SDS Operations Director Danny Logue said: “This can be a difficult time for some young people and their parents, but our advice is not to panic because there are lots of options they can consider.

"They can find out more by calling our Helpline advisers. Getting information about the choices that are available can make decisions about their next steps much clearer.”

Results will be dropping on doorsteps on Tuesday as well as being delivered by email and text.

This is only the second year of the National 4 and 5 qualifications and the first year for many new Highers.

SDS has a helpline offering advice, information and support for young people and their parents, whether their results are not what they had hoped or better than anticipated.

SDS advisers will be on hand to offer callers access to information on UCAS course vacancies at college and universities across the UK, Confirmation and Clearing, advice about Modern Apprenticeships, employment and training opportunities.

There is also post-results information for pupils and parents on SDS’s My World of Work web service.

Students can also access help, advice and support via SDS’s Facebook page which has practical help and links to UCAS, SAAS, Young Scot and the SQA.

Ruth Scott, a careers coach with Skills Development Scotland, said: "To anyone who might be feeling nervous I would say, just pick up the phone.

"You can have someone next to you if you're really worried and we are more than happy to take phone calls from parents.

"Everybody's nervous because it's a difficult conversation to be having when you're thinking, 'I'm feeling really rubbish about myself,' but the best thing to do is to speak to us."

The helpline, now in its 23rd year, will be open from 8am until 8pm on August 4 and 5 and from 9am until 5pm daily until August 12.

The helpline number is 0808 100 8000.
