ONE young man whose exams results were a success was Leon Jones, who combined a junior football career with earning six Highers.

The 17-year-old gained an impressive five As for maths, chemistry, biology, PE and geography as well as a B for English.

However, despite scoring well more than a hat trick of results, Leon was kicking himself for not gaining six As.

The Hillhead High School pupil said: "I thought I'd done quite well during the English exam but I must have been wrong.

"I gained all As for my prelims and was really hoping I could repeat that success for the real exams.

"I know I've done well but I still feel a bit disappointed."

However, dad Chris was full of nothing but pride for his boy's achievements.

He said: "Chris is a perfectionist and anyone who knows him would agree that he sets out to do the best he can and gets annoyed with himself if he doesn't win.

"His mum and I are really proud of him and we think he's done incredibly well, especially when he has had all the pressure of his football training on him too."

Leon, who captained the under-18 Scotland squad, is signed to Heart of Midlothian.

He has been travelling to Edinburgh four nights a week throughout his fifth year of school for training with matches at the weekend.

He was Dux of the school and gained six Band 1 As - the highest possible mark - in his prelim exams.

But he said the support of his teachers at Hillhead has been invaluable to ensuring academic success.

Leon, from Springburn, added: "My teachers have been fantastic in supporting me. There are supported study sessions in the evenings and I have been able to go to them as the school for extra tuition.

"I have signed a two-year contract with Hearts but they offer one day of education so I will be seeing what subjects I can study and taking them up on that.

"It's really important to me to keep learning."
