RESULTS were up across the board not just in Glasgow but throughout Scotland.

In North Lanarkshire pupils were put forward for the first time in the new national qualifications, introduced as part of the Curriculum for Excellence.

Some 38% of candidates achieved five or more National 5 - formerly Standard Grade credit level - awards compared to 37% at level five last year.

The 2015 figures for Higher attainment are at their highest in the past 10 years: pupils gaining three or more Highers are at 30.5% and five or more awards at 11.5%.

The S6 results at Higher level show a similar trend: one or more awards at 60.3%, three or more at 40% and five or more awards at Higher Grade to 27%.

These figures once again are the highest in 10 years.

Councillor Jim Logue, Convener of Learning and Leisure Services, said: “North Lanarkshire’s exam success is at an all time high with more young people than ever before gaining awards at all levels.

“Our schools have been awarded a fantastic report card today with exam results up across all indicators.

"This is an outstanding achievement and proves we are raising the attainment and aspirations, and improving the life chances of young people in North Lanarkshire.”

East Renfrewshire's schools were also boasting a record-breaking year with results at S4, S5 and S6 up across the local authority's seven high schools.

A total of 42% achieved five or more Highers, compared to 39% the previous year. A total of 64% achieved three or more Highers, and 80% at least one Higher.

Some 170 pupils achieved five or more Highers at grade A.

At S4, young people achieved the highest ever results – 94% achieved five qualifications or more.

Convener for education and equalities, Councillor Elaine Green, said: “These are outstanding results and another record-breaking, astounding performance for East Renfrewshire.

“These achievements are a tribute to the hard work of pupils, exceptionally well supported by our staff and parents.

“Congratulations to everyone – there’s real cause for celebration today.”

This is the first year East Renfrewshire’s pupils have sat the new National exams at S4.

Renfrewshire reported similar results with a 1% increase in those gaining three or more highers and a rise of 5% in young people at S4 level gaining five or more awards at National 5 level.

Councillor Jacqueline Henry, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children Policy Board, said: “The past few years have seen significant changes to the way our young people learn and achieve qualifications.

"It is important to recognise that these figures do not reflect the full achievements of our young people, some of whom gain other qualifications and awards such as City and Guilds, and Duke of Edinburgh awards.”
