The SNP's Rosa Zambonini has been elected to serve as a councillor for Wishaw.

Marion Fellows resigned from North Lanarkshire Council in May after being elected as the SNP MP for Motherwell and Wishaw.

A by-election was held on Thursday and the number of votes polled was 3,794, giving a turnout of 26.1%.

The electoral quota was 1,876 and Ms Zambonini was elected with 1,915 first preference votes.

After the result was announced she to took to Twitter to thank her supporters.

"Thank you so much to the people of Wishaw for electing me as councillor let the hard work begin," Ms Zambonini wrote, adding: "It will be my honour to serve #SNP."

Peter McDade of the Scottish Labour Party polled 1,230 votes, Scottish Conservative candidate Marjory Borthwick got 385 votes, Maria Feeney of the Scottish Socialists won 117 votes, UKIP candidate Neil Wilson polled 67 votes and the Liberal Democrat candidate Gerard Neary got only 37 votes, while 43 ballot papers were rejected.

Returning Officer, Gavin Whitefield, said: "I would like to congratulate Ms Zambonini on her election. I look forward to seeing her at the next council meeting."
