DETECTIVES are hunting for other victims of the man who murdered Karen Buckley in Glasgow.

Former private schoolboy Alexander Pacteau admitted murdering the Irish nurse by repeatedly clubbing her with a spanner, strangling her and dumping her body in a barrel of caustic soda.

He is believed to have lured the 24-year-old into his car outside a Glasgow nightclub by offering her a lift home. Pacteau drove to a secluded west end street and killed the student within just 20 minutes of meeting her.

A police source said officers will leave "no stone unturned" in the search for other potential victims.

The Sunday Herald has learned Pacteau was stalking other women in Glasgow's West End on the night of the murder.

After watching CCTV footage from Dumbarton Road on April 11, detectives suspect the 21-year-old had been watching another young woman, moments before he met Karen Buckley.

As part of the murder investigation, police traced the woman, who was wearing a distinctive, bright dress, and interviewed her.

However, the young woman had "no idea" she was being watched or followed and the line of inquiry was dropped.

Detective Superintendent Jim Kerr, from Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team, said: "Our investigation and subsequent report to the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, documented what police currently know about the activities of Alexander Pacteau."

Kerr added that if anyone had any information about other incidents that Pacteau may have been involved in then "we would ask that they contact police".

Kerr also rubbished Pacteau's claims that an argument between the pair led to Karen Buckley's murder.

In fact, the senior officer said Pacteau was willing to prey on any woman who crossed his path and the killer's fatal attack "could have happened to any female".

Kerr, who oversaw the murder inquiry, branded the 21-year-old a "callous and calculated" murderer whose "lies unravelled" through a combination of information from the community, investigative work, CCTV analysis and forensic techniques.

Almost 2000 hours of CCTV footage were reviewed by officers working on the case.

They included chilling images showing Pacteau buying bottles of caustic soda at a city shop less than 10 hours after the murder.

He calmly loaded up his basket and paid for the bottles, which he would then use to try to dissolve the body in an attempt to cover up his tracks.

Having used his mobile phone to search the internet for information about caustic soda, Pacteau spent that Sunday morning driving to various supermarkets and DIY stores in the west end to pick up supplies to cover his tracks.

Security footage taken at just 11am the same day shows Pacteau buying several bottles of caustic soda at the PoundStretcher store in Crow Road.

Over the next two days he tried to dispose of her body by soaking it in chemicals in his bath and in a barrel at High Craigton Farm near Milngavie.

While his flatmate was out, Pacteau carried his victim's body into his bathroom and placed her in the bath of chemicals.

He submerged her body in caustic soda and then tried to clean the flat of any trace of her.
