The death of a pensioner whose body was found at his home is now being treated as murder, police have confirmed.

Malcolm Ballantyne was found dead at his home in Glebe Place, Saltcoats, North Ayrshire at around 1.10pm on Friday.

The 72-year-old, known as Malky, was well-known in the area.

Police Scotland yesterday said the death was suspicious but they confirmed their inquiry has become a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination was carried out.

Leading the inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector Gary Cunningham, of the Major Investigation Team, said: "Officers are continuing to carry out door to door enquiries as well as examining CCTV to try and establish the circumstances surrounding Mr Ballantyne's death.

"An incident caravan has been set up in Glebe Street where officers will be available to provide reassurance and speak to any members of the public who may have information about what happened."

Anyone with information about Mr Ballantyne's death is being urged to contact officers at Saltcoats police office on 101.
