A WILDLIFE expert will this weekend lead nature walks through Scotland's newest woodland park.

The Come and Try event is aimed at letting the public investigate Cuningar Loop opposite the Athletes' Village.

As well as enjoying three walks on Sunday guided by John Derbyshire, the public will also get a chance to check out the new activity zone which features a bike skills park, bouldering park, adventure play and woodland workout..

Forest Enterprise Scotland’s £5.7 million Cuningar Loop project is transforming an area of formerly derelict land into an attractive woodland park.

It is opening its gates for the next few weeks to give people a peek at what the park has to offer before its official opening in spring 2016.

When finished, Cuningar Loop will feature an extensive path network, a boardwalk running along the River Clyde, picnic areas, a large meadow and outdoor classroom.

Mr Derbyshire said: “Cuningar Loop is a year round destination for wildlife. At this time of year we’ll be looking out for red bibbed swallows, willow warblers, hawks and falcons.

"The Loop is also great for pollinators, day time bees and night time moths. At night the woodland comes alive with bats, deer, foxes and otters.

"It really is an exceptional place for wildlife and a great opportunity for local people to see what’s right on their doorstep.”

Cuningar Loop is being transformed into native woodland with open grassland and meadows and 15,000 trees, 30,000 shrubs, 40,000 bulbs and meadow grass have been planted.

Forest Enterprise Scotland’s project manager for Cuningar Loop, Joneen Clarke said: “We want people to be inspired by the wildlife at Cuningar Loop. "Our nature walks are a really great opportunity for people to come down and experience the nature and wildlife that lives right outside their front door.”

Nature walks will take place at 12.15pm, 1.30pm and 2.45pm each lasting around 90 minutes with a maximum of 15 on each walk. Sign up will take place at the bouldering marquee. All paths are accessible.
