A food bank has issued a desperate plea for donations.

Hillington Park Parish Church has been feeding up to 100 people a week who come from Govan, Craigton, Pollok and Ibrox.

But its stocks are now running impossibly low and organisers are calling out to generous locals to help fill its shelves.

Last Friday the food bank fed 80 people - but this week Helen says they will have only enough to feed three or four single people and not enough for any families.

Helen Rodger, who helps run the food bank, said: "We have never been this bad.

"Last Friday we fed 80 people and stocks ran low but we thought we would be able to go to the main centre at Ibrox Parish Church and stock up.

"However, they don't have anything to give us and no one else has either. If any families come to us for help we will not be able to help them.

"It's frightening. We are really scared."

Each week Hillington Park Church feeds between 70 and 80 people, reaching a high of 103.

The food bank relies on donations from congregants at its own parish and at Ibrox Parish Church as well as receiving donations from Tesco and from collection points in the local Morrisons and Sainsburys.

It was set up in December 2013 by volunteers from the church and in 2014 gave out 3279 food parcels to 2159 adults and 1120 children.

Helen said: "We are seeing people travelling from further and further afield to come to us.

"The people looking to us for help are those who have had their benefits cut or are facing benefits sanctions. The majority are in work but are low paid or on zero hours contracts.

"It is absolutely frightening how many people we get who are on zero hours contracts."

The church, on Berryknowes Road near Paisley Road West, opens on a Friday morning to support people who need help.

They give out food, toiletries and washing powder to those who cannot afford to buy basics for themselves.

Helen is also seeing people who are desperate yet are still concerned about making sure their pets are taken care of.

She added: "A woman came in and dropped us off a huge donation of dog food and cat food, which was something we hadn't even thought of.

"But last week we had about five dogs to feed and three cats so that's something that people really are concerned about.

"Of course, our priority is getting enough food to feed people.

"We have plenty of volunteers to help run the foodbank but we don't have enough food and it's only getting worse.

"It is becoming harder and harder to meet peoples' needs and this week we are getting to the stage where people are panicking."

To drop off food donations, please visit the church at the following times: Monday between 9.30am and 11am; Wednesday between 9.30am and 11am or 7.15pm and 9pm;Friday between 10am and 1pm; or Sunday between 10.30am and 1pm.
