Car company director David Blackmore is swapping four wheels for a bike, a kayak and two feet to help his firm smash a £200,000 charity target.

The 49-year-old dad-of-two is running the equivalent of three back-to-back marathons, rowing 23 miles and cycling for 68 miles throughout the Scottish Highlands in just three days to raise funds for Maggie’s Centres.

Next month David, commercial director of Glasgow-based leasing and fleet management company, Fleet Alliance, is aiming to raise £10,000, which will take his company’s fundraising achievements to more than £200,000.

Dubbed the ‘Xtreme 3’, the multi-discipline, 168-mile long challenge was conceived and planned by David and begins in the rugged Scottish Highlands and encompasses the Great Glen Way and the West Highland Way.

In order to complete the challenge David will run, kayak and cycle from Maggie's Centre in Inverness all the way to Maggie's Centre in Glasgow in just three days.

The route, which also includes Fort William and Inverarnan, takes David across locations that are as stunning as they are punishing.

A team of David’s Fleet Alliance office colleagues will make up his support team over the gruelling three-day challenge. A van will provide mobile back-up and storage for David’s extensive supplies including 30 bottles of water, 30 protein and energy snacks, four freeze sprays, three bottles of midge spray and six foil blankets.

Taking a break from his full-on training schedule, David said: “There’s no doubt I’ll be pushing myself to the extremes of my physical – and mental – limits but when you know about the great work that the Maggie’s Centres do for cancer patients and their families it keeps the mind focused.

“The training has been tough but enjoyable. The actual challenge over the three days will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

“All my colleagues have been very supportive, keeping up my spirits whenever the training has been demanding.

“Covering 168 miles over the three days and by the different means will take its toll but I’ll keep the finishing line in mind – along with a very long, hot bath!”

David who lives with his family in Dunlop in Ayrshire is no stranger to fundraising. He’s previously participated in four Maggie's Monster Bike and Hike events, skydived from 30,000 feet, cycled around North Kintyre and the Firth of Clyde as part of the Five Ferries Challenge, and even spent a week in Nairobi, Kenya, helping raise awareness of Siloam Orphanage and the invaluable work they do educating children in the face of extreme poverty.

However, David's efforts are not unique within the Fleet Alliance company, which manages company car fleets for UK-wide businesses. Over the last six years, the 50-strong workforce has collectively raised more than £190,000 for many charities, with Maggie's Cancer Centres being one of those closest to their hearts.

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. Built in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Centres are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need.

Martin Brown, Fleet Alliance managing director, who is also a board member for Maggie’s Centres, said: “Our desire to do our bit for charity is a fundamental aspect of our culture. We call it ‘Fleet Alliance Loves’ because it underpins our work ethic: improving ourselves both personally and professionally by having fun, performing work for charity and caring for the environment.

“For 2015, we set the fund-raising bar higher than ever, part of which includes raising as much money as possible in support of Maggie's X3 and in aid of Maggie's Cancer Centres. Our initial target for the event is £10,000 and donations from staff, suppliers, friends and family are already flooding in.”

Kerry Craig, Centre Head at Maggie’s Gartnavel said: “We’re so impressed at the enormous challenge which David is taking on for Maggie’s.

“Support like David’s is invaluable in making sure we can continue to be here for anyone with cancer, and their family and friends, when they need us most. We wish David all the best and would encourage anyone who can, to support him.“
