AN appeal has been launched for the owners of two tearaway tortoises who made a run for it - albeit very slowly.

The Hermann's tortoises were found miles apart with one apprehended in the north of the city and one in the south.

They have been taken into custody by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who are trying to establish who owns them.

In the meantime, the pair who have been named Mikey and Leo are being looked after at the animal charity's centre in Cardonald.

Centre manager Anna O'Donnell said, "It's likely Leo and Mikey's owners have let them into the garden to enjoy the recent warm weather and they have managed to escape.

"It's not unusual for tortoises to dig under their outdoor runs or squeeze through a small gap in a fence.

"We are not revealing the exact location of where Mikey and Leo were found as we expect to receive quite a lot of calls and will use this information to help determine their rightful owners.

"If no-one comes forward we'll find them both loving new homes."

Anyone who recognises Mikey or Leo is being asked to contact the Scottish SPCA's Glasgow centre on 03000 999 999.
