ANGRY residents today called for a ban on open-air gigs in a local park after a music event descended into booze-fuelled violence and disorder.

Police arrested almost 40 people - including 10 for violent offences – at Bellahouston Park, in Glasgow, at the weekend as violence erupted at the Summer Sessions festival and scenes outside descended into chaos.

Thousands of revellers descended on the south side of Glasgow for the two-day pop fest.

However, dozens were nabbed by cops for a range of offences at the Paolo Nutini gig on Saturday and the Calvin Harris concert the following night.

Around 70 fixed penalty notices were also handed out to drunken louts.

A police source told the Evening Times: “It’s an impossible situation and Bellahouston Park is not a suitable venue for this kind of event. It shouldn’t be allowed in a residential area.”

A major clean-up operation was underway in the park yesterday in the wake of the 35,000-capacity event.

But families living near the park said they were left terrified as drunken music fans stumbled through their gardens. Some also complained of yobs using their gardens as toilets.

One resident told the Evening Times such festivals shouldn’t be allowed to go ahead in a residential area.

She said: “I witnessed people drinking and urinating in the street without any police intervention.

“I have seen similar behaviour at Rangers’ football matches and there is a zero tolerance approach. So why is this not the same at the Summer Sessions?

“Fifty-thousand Rangers fans are also able to clear the area without any need for road closures, rudeness and hassle.

“Mosspark is hugely residential area and these concerts should not be allowed in such built up areas.”

Another resident branded the events as “a disaster”.

He said: “I saw plenty of teenagers, who were underage, drinking as they made their way into the park.”

Pop star Ellie Goulding was forced to ask fans to behave as a fight broke out during her set.

She told the crowd: “Can I say one thing, please, from me. Can you guys look after each other?

“No fighting, come on, peace. No fighting, there’s no need for it.”

Footage was also posted online of a fight involving two girls at the Sunday Sessions. It is understood to have happened at around 7.30pm, ahead of Harris’s headliner set.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm 38 arrests were made at the concerts at Bellahouston Park over the weekend.”

Last year, 30 people were arrested at David Guetta’s DJ set in Bellahouston Park and 13 music fans were nabbed at the Killers’ gig.

Ahead of the event, the Evening Times reported that police planned to beef up security to ensure there was no disorder.

We revealed details of a security plan, which was devised to deal with any violence or antisocial behaviour from the anticipated 30,000-strong crowd.

Mounted branch, as well as police on mountain bikes, were also drafted in.

However, 38 arrests were made and 70 fixed penalty notices handed out.

The Evening Times reported two years ago how residents were left terrified as drunken fans used their gardens as toilets after the first Summer Sessions.
