A Glasgow-based housing association wants to build 50 new homes for social rent at the site of a former Vale primary school.

The Dumbarton Reporter says Cube Housing Association, part of the Wheatley Group, has applied to build the new properties at the empty Bonhill Primary School site.

The school closed in 2010 and pupils moved to a new school built across the road from the Victorian property, which opened its doors in 1874 and taught generations of Bonhill families.

A Wheatley Group spokeswoman said: “Fifty new homes for social rent in Dumbarton are being planned by Cube Housing Association.

“Cube Housing Association wants to build on the former site of Bonhill Primary School, subject to planning and other approvals.

“The planned project is part of a partnership between Cube, which is part of Wheatley Group, and West Dunbartonshire Council, which owns the site.

A consultation event is planned in September to let local people hear proposals for the site and have their say.”

The announcement comes after the same housing association revealed it plans to build 31 new homes in a £3.3million development in Dumbarton.

The two-storey homes for affordable rent are proposed for Carrick Terrace.

The site was formerly home to council-owned flats which were knocked down around two years ago.

The housing plans are part of the Wheatley Group’s strategic housing partnership with the council which was agreed last year.

The deal involves the delivery of 393 new social rented homes across the council area combined with a promise to create 300 new jobs and training opportunities, sustain 1,000 construction jobs and 1,200 indirect jobs in the wider community.
