FOUR indoor tennis courts in the Gorbals have been given a new lease of life just weeks before the David Cup clash.

The Glasgow Club courts have been resurfaced at a cost of £40,000 as part of a Glasgow Life commitment to widen access to tennis facilities across the city.

The council run body has also unveiled a revised citywide coaching programme which includes 150 weekly sessions at the city's indoor and outdoor facilities.

Recently it was revealed attendances at Glasgow's 25 free to use public tennis courts are at an all time high with an increase of almost 200% in just two years.

Glasgow Life chairman Archie Graham said: "Glasgow has some of the best indoor community tennis facilities anywhere in the country and the newly resurfaced courts at the Glasgow Club Gorbals will ensure that remains the case for years to come.

"There is no doubt our investment in new and improved courts and the success of Andy Murray is leading to attendances at courts across the city experiencing huge increases. We are committed to building on that.

"In just a few weeks, the eyes of the world will be on the Emirates Arena for the David Cup but long after the action finishes, the next generation will be developing their skills on our fantastic network of courts, including the Gorbals. A fantastic legacy for future generations."

Glasgow Life tennis development officer Mike Kolacz said: "This recent investment is another example of Glasgow's commitment to develop the sport and capitalise at a unique time for tennis in Scotland.

"The courts at the Gorbals have grown in popularity over the years and maintaining the quality of indoor tennis provision is absolutely critical if we want to sustain continued growth in participation across the city.

"The new indoor courts also mark the launch of Glasgow's new indoor coaching programme for all ages and abilities so now is the perfect time to pick up a racquet and give it a go."

Andy Murray will lead the UK tennis team when it takes on Australia in the Davis Cup clash later this month.

The British number one said last month: "It is exciting for the team to be going back to Glasgow.

"It is always special to play in front of a home crowd and we are fortunate to have played our last three ties at home.

"We had a unique atmosphere in Glasgow, the crowd was unbelievable. It is going to be a huge week for our team and we'll be doing everything we can to get GB through to the final."

World number three Murray has an outstanding singles record in the Davis Cup, winning 21 of his 23 matches in GB colours.
