WATER is being restored to customers in Cumbernauld who were cut off because of a burst water main.

Around 1000 homes were affected and when normal supplies are restored will depend on their location in the network.

Scottish Water is progressing with work to restore normal supplies to customers in parts of Cumbernauld who are affected by a burst water main.

Engineers have been working all day to restore normal supplies as quickly as possible to affected properties, mainly in the G67 postcode area, and we anticipate that normal supplies will be restored at some point this evening.

Some customers have been experiencing a loss of normal water supply, low water pressure or discoloured water due to the burst 30 inch main in Forest Road, Abronhill this morning.

Engineers have been using backfeeds to introduce water supplies from other parts of the network while the repair work on the burst main continues.

The repair work is complex because of the close proximity of a concrete chamber to the affected part of the main.

When the burst occurred, there was the potential for it to have affected up to about 17,000 properties. However, our engineers were able to re-zone the network quickly, tanker water into the system and reduce the scale of the disruption.

We estimate that less than 1000 properties on higher grounds in parts of Cumbernauld, mainly the G67 area but a small number in G68, are affected.

When normal supplies are restored to the affected properties will depend on their location on the network.

Should affected customers experience discoloured water when their supplies are restored they should run the cold water tap in their kitchen gently until the water runs clear.

Scottish Water is doing all it can to minimise inconvenience to customers and is making bottled water available at a collection point at the premises of Polygon UK, Cumbernauld Business Park, Wardpark Road, Cumbernauld G67 3JZ.

Although the situation is improving, we are setting up a second bottled water collection point in the town centre and we will inform customers of the location as soon as possible via our website and social media.

Scottish Water is stressing that this bottled water is intended only for customers whose normal water supplies are affected and is urging those whose supplies are not affected not to take bottled water.

Scottish Water has been delivering bottled water to customers who required additional assistance.

The burst caused some localised disruption, including the closure of Forest Road, and affected services on the Cumbernauld railway line.

Scottish Water apologises for the inconvenience to affected customers and can assure them we are doing everything we can to restore normal supplies as quickly as possible and to minimise any inconvenience. We thank affected customers for their patience and understanding.
