THE sentencing of Alexander Pacteau, the man who admitted the murder of Irish student Karen Buckley is to be televised.

The Judicial Office For Scotland has confirmed that permission has been granted for Sky News to record Lady Rae's sentencing statement on a pool basis, meaning it has to be shared with other broadcasters.

Last month, Pacteau admitted repeatedly hitting Ms Buckley with a spanner and strangling her in his car in April.

He then hid the body of the 24-year-old, from Cork, in a barrel.

After sentence was deferred at the High Court in Glasgow, Ms Buckley's father said Pacteau was "evil" and should spend the rest of his life in prison.

The sentencing is scheduled for September 8 in the South Court at Glasgow High Court.

The Judicial Office For Scotland said: "The sentencing statement will be filmed for subsequent news broadcast and published in full following the conclusion of proceedings."

The court has also granted permission to members of the press to use live text-based communication from court, allowing journalists to tweet live from the proceedings once the sentencing diet is under way.

The court previously heard how 21-year-old Pacteau had met Ms Buckley outside the Sanctuary nightclub, where she had been with friends, in the early hours of Sunday April 12.

Ms Buckley's body was found at High Craigton Farm, near Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire.four days after she went missing from the Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow.

Earlier this month it emerged that, in a first for a Scottish court, it would allow the televising of a court hearing. It relates to a legal challenge to the election of former Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael as the MP for Orkney and Shetland.

Carmichael, who held his Orkney and Shetland seat by a narrow margin in the general election, is due to appear in court on Monday to face claims from constituents that he breached the Representation of the People Act 1983.

The case will examine Mr Carmichael's conduct over the leak of a memo about First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s meeting with a French ambassador.
