EIGHT new jobs have been created with the expansion of a Glasgow sandwich shop.

Those behind Where the Monkey Sleeps, on West Regent Street, have opened a new branch in a former pawn shop at 340 Argyle Street.

The new shop will also see the development of the cafe's relationship with homeless charity Glasgow City Mission.

Owner, Glasgow-born Sofie Ford, donates 10% of the annual profits and money generated by the carrier bag charge to Glasgow City Mission.

Any unsold food at the end of each day is also donated to the charity’s evening drop-in service for the city’s homeless.

And the new shop will double as an art gallery for artist Paul Marshall who is a client of the mission.

Sofie, 26, said: "The new shop has allowed us to really grow our relationship with Glasgow City Mission.

"As a business we greatly believe in building community, not only with our customers and everyone who is part of our team but also with those who are working to make our city great.

"It is a massive privilege to help in any way with the work the GCM do and we are thrilled to see interest in the paintings already.”

Where The Monkey Sleeps was voted ‘best food on the go’ in The Skinny magazine in 2015 and in one of Yelp's ‘top 100 places to eat in the UK’.

Sofie specialises in hearty breakfasts, lunch and snacks and the menu includes handmade to order bagels and paninis, salads and homemade soup and stews.

She added: “Our business is based around office workers so we knew our second location had to be in an area with a high volume of offices, which made the recently regenerated Financial Services District a short walk from Argyle Street the ideal location for us.

“We enlisted the services of Allan Wylie of Ayrshire business OBW Projects who restored the building to its former glory and transformed the former pawn shop using materials that were reinstated from the strip-out."
