OLYMPIAN Sir Chris Hoy has again given his support to a charity set up to help families bereaved by violent deaths.

As told by the Evening Times in May, Sir Chris wrote to two amateur cyclists who made a 300-mile cycle for The Moira Fund, set up in honour of murdered Moira Jones.

Now, the gold medal winner has signed a specially-designed Moira Fund cycling shirt to be auctioned at this year's Moira Fund Dance.

Bea Jones, Moira's mum, said: "We are thrilled that Sir Chris Hoy has signed a specially-designed, quality, Moira Fund cycling shirt.

"The shirt was specially commissioned by our cyclists, Donna and Steve Stone, who raised more than £7000 for the charity in May.

"It is the last of only 10 produced, now the only one to have the signature of this superb Olympian, this national hero.

"We are all delighted."

The unique shirt, professionally framed, will be auctioned at this year's Moira Fund Dance on September 26.

The event will be the seventh annual dance to raise funds to help those families struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one through murder.

The charity, which is run wholly by unpaid volunteers, has helped more than 500 families nationwide in many different ways.

Bea added: "In the last year, in the Glasgow area alone, we have helped many with funeral costs, paid for families to have respite breaks to give them space and quality time together, paid for travel costs, arranged specialist counselling and helped in other ways too.

"This is what we want to do.

"We know how much desperate families need the support of others. We want to help."

Moira was murdered in Queen's Park in 2008. Her killer was jailed for 25 years in 2009 after being found guilty of raping, robbing and killing the 40-year-old.

Patron of the Moira Fund is former Lord Advocate Elish Angiolini, who prosecuted Moira's killer.

Donna and Steve, who live in Bea's home village of Weston, in Staffordshire, cycled from Queen's Park, on Glasgow's south side, back to Weston, in order to raise money for Moira's Funds.

They raised an impressive £7000 to be used to support families who have lost a loved one to murder.

The Moira Fund Autumn Dance will to be held at The Couper Institute, on Clarkston Road.
