RAIL passengers faced travel chaos today after thieves ripped cable from a busy commuter route.
Around 100 metres of copper signalling cable was stolen from the line between Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The theft is understood to have taken place overnight and was reported to police at around 9am today.
Thousands of commuters travelling between the cities by train were hit by delays and cancellations.
British Transport Police confirmed railway cable was stolen and a probe has been launched.
A BTP spokesman said: "Investigations by BTP ongoing after a large quantity of railway cable was stolen in Falkirk area.
"ScotRail services were disrupted as a result."
Train bosses said an issue with the signalling system between Falkirk High and Croy was causing the delays.
The damage led to misery for passengers relying on train services in and out of Glasgow Queen Street.
