Aroun 100 people have been evacuated following a suspected gas leak at a meat factory.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene at the Dunbia Meat Factory in Ayrshire after a report of an ammonia leak yesterday morning.

The area was cordoned off and evacuated 83 staff from the building on Littlemill Road in Drongan.

It is understood Scottish Fire and Rescue service quickly identified the source of the leak. They also isolated electricity and gas to that area of the building.

Specially trained police officers attended the scene to carry out safety tests using specialised equipment.

When the building was properly ventilated and deemed safe to enter engineers were able to enter and fix the cause of the leak.

Inspector David Carballo, of Kilmarnock Police Office, said: "The timely multi-agency response to this incident was vital in ensuring the safety of staff and members of the public.

"Working alongside the Scottish Fire and Rescue service we were able to isolate the area and minimise the risk to those nearby.

"We would like to reassure the public that strenuous safety tests have been carried out and there is no longer any risk from the site."
