POLICE are to quiz residents and local workers a week after a man was shot near a Bishopbriggs primary school.

The 33-year-old man, named locally as Ross Sherlock, was targeted by a hitman on Thursday September 24 at Dornoch Place in Bishopbriggs, around 3.10pm.

It is thought the man was a former close associate of gangster Kevin “Gerbil” Carrol, who was killed in January 2010 after being gunned down in a supermarket car park.

We previously reported how insiders feared tit-for-tat attacks following the latest incident.

A burnt out grey Volkswagen Golf, bearing the registration FR12 PYB, was found in nearby Wood Lane and is a key focus of the investigation.

It was reported stolen in March.

Police officers will today revisit the scene of last week's shooting in an attempt to jog people's memories and ask for information.

High-visibility community policing officers and plain-clothed detectives will stop and quiz residents, workers and parents close to St Helens Primary.

Detective Superintendent Stephen Grant said, “By re-visiting the scene, we hope to jog people’s memories before, during and after the incident.

"Perhaps you saw the Volkswagen Golf in another street or saw something suspicious which you didn’t think was before.

"We suspect this car has been involved with the shooting incident and I would ask anyone to get in touch who may know something.

"Investigations are ongoing and detectives are undertaking priority lines of enquiry."

The incident has shocked and startled many of the nearby residents, and extra police officers have been put in place to help with reassurance.

Chief Inspector Craig Smith, the Local Area Commander said, “We have increased our policing presence in the local community to reassure the public and again, I would encourage people to approach my officers with any concerns.

"My campus police officer, who is well known to pupils will be in the local primary school this week to engage with pupils and provide reassurance.

"We are working very closely with East Dunbartonshire Council and the school to provide support to pupils and their families in order that the children can get back to their daily school routine as quickly as possible.

"This has clearly impacted on the local community but please be assured that my officers alongside the team of dedicated detectives are working round the clock to find who is responsible."

A major incident room has been established at Kirkintilloch Police Office and detective officers are following a number of lines of enquiry.
