JUDY MURRAY surprised children in Castlemilk when she turned up with a camera crew in tow for an impromptu play session.

The tennis coach and Strictly Come Dancing star was filming for Children in Need and seeing how funds donated to the Jeely Piece Club are being put to good use.

It will all be screened on BBC Scotland this Sunday during coverage of the Great Scottish Run.

"The club has about 54 kids and we do outdoor play in different parts of Castlemilk," said Tracey Black, director of services at the Jeely Piece Club.

"Judy went out into the woods with them to play, it was all about seeing what the kids do and engaging with them. They do things that we all used to: build dens, climb trees and create mud slides.

"It was a beautiful night, the weather was great."

The kids' club, based at Machrie Drive, received about £60,000 over two years from Children in Need to fund staff who will take children to play outdoors.

Some of the youngsters will be taking part in the children's section of the Great Scottish Run this Saturday.

"Our kids are aged from five to 12 years old, from schools all across Castlemilk. It let Judy see kids doing physical activity in an outdoor environment and just loving it.

"Later on, she came back to the community centre and they all played games of tennis with balloons.

"The kids were really excited, they were getting her to sign arms and bags, you name it. They were asking her lots of questions about Andy and Jamie.

"The fact she came to them really made a difference, it was great for the kids."

Judy left the Jeely Piece Club with a parting shot – a swingball for the youngsters to practice their tennis skills.

"It was absolutely fantastic to visit the Jeely Piece project in Glasgow and see first-hand how money raised for BBC Children in Need is making such a huge impact on young lives in the local area," said Judy.

"Thanks to this project the young people I met are able to play in a safe space outdoors, which is something every young person should be able to enjoy. With the 2015 appeal just around the corner I would like to ask people across the UK to get fundraising, as the money raised really does go on to make a huge difference."
