MPS and councillors urged David Cameron to scrap plans to renew Trident when they met at a demonstration in Glasgow.

The local and national politicians - including Alison Thewliss MP, Chris Stephens MP, Gavin Newlands MP, Patrick Harvie MSP, Councillor Susan Aitken and Councillor Anna Richardson - met with CND campaigners in the city’s Buchanan Street to sign a declaration.

It states: “We call on the UK Prime Minister to respect the democratic will of the people of Scotland and cancel the £100 billion plan to renew Trident”.

John Ainslie, coordinator of Scottish CND said: “When it comes to the vote next year we can be almost certain that 58 of Scotland’s 59 MPs will    oppose Trident renewal.
“The Scottish Parliament voted against the proposal in 2007 and 2014.

“David Cameron should respect the expressed will of the people of Scotland and scrap the plan for new nuclear-armed submarines.”

Labour’s sole MP, Ian Murray, has spoken against Trident. Mr Ainslie said: “The Liberal Democrat conference agreed that they would oppose the current proposal for Trident renewal and so Alistair Carmichael is likely to also vote against, leaving David Mundell as the sole Scottish MP who backs Trident renewal.”
