FIREFIGHTERS rescued a man from his Glasgow home after a blaze broke out in the living room.

Crews raced to the flat in Dougrie Terrace, Castlemilk, at around 7.25pm yesterday.

It is understood neighbours raised the alarm by calling 999.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Watch Manager Steven McCusker, the incident commander, said: "The fire was within the living room.

"We committed two firefighters in breathing apparatus and they extinguished it using a high pressure jet.

"They rescued a man who appeared to be suffering from smoke inhalation and ensured no-one else was inside the property."

Paramedics were called and the man was taken by ambulance to Hairmyres Hospital for a precautionary check-up.

Crews from Castlemilk and Polmadie community fire stations were sent to the scene and reached the address within four minutes.

Firefighters conducted salvage operations within the fire-hit flat before leaving the scene shortly after 8pm.

Although the cause of the blaze it still to be confirmed, fire chiefs warned electrical appliances, furniture and soft furnishings, stoves, portable heaters and candles are all potential fire hazards.

Watch Manager McCusker added: "When fire strikes within a home the toxic smoke produced can very quickly spread to other rooms and threaten lives.

"Even if no-one is hurt it is a traumatic experience for anyone as the loss of irreplaceable personal possessions, the damage to a person’s sense of safety and the financial impact can all be devastating.

"Although it can happen to anyone there are very easy steps that everyone can take to make it less likely."
