NINETEEN tons of aid for Serbian refugees left Glasgow today following a mammoth collection effort by a local charity.

A 40ft truck left Cathcart Old Parish Church at 11am thanks to Glasgow the Caring City.

The aid included winter clothing and hygiene kits and is due to arrive in Novi Sad on Monday.

It will be distributed by the charity and the Red Cross to refugees at local transit points and drop-in centres in Serbia.

Around 6000 refugees are passing through Novi Sad every day.

The donations have been arriving at the charity from across Scotland over the past few weeks and have been sorted and packed by charity volunteers.

A reception was held at the church today for volunteers.

Funding for the shipment was provided by the Scottish government.

Ross Galbraith, international projects manager for the charity, will be travelling to Serbia on Friday with James Dornan MSP to liaise with the Red Cross over future efforts.
