A WOMAN was attacked by a would-be robber as she walked to work early today.

Police said she was targeted by a thug - who smelt strongly of alcohol - in a lane near Hamilton West Railway Station at 6.30am.

The man tried to grab her handbag and assaulted her during the struggle.

The suspect ran off, empty handed, in the direction of Hamilton Academical Football Park.

Police said the man is described as white, about 5ft 8in tall and was wearing a black waterproof hooded top, with the hood up and dark trousers.

A spokesman added: ""he victim detected a strong smell of alcohol from the male."

Detective Constable Stuart Stevenson, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would urge anyone with information about this incident to come forward.

"The victim is a member of our community, who was on her way to work when this man has taken advantage of her being on her own."
