DRAW the curtains, light some candles and mark the change of the seasons with some of the best home fragrances around.

“Seeing the seasons change is always exciting and the move into autumn is many people’s favourite time of the year,” says Rosey Barnet, creative director at Glasgow-based Shearer Candles.

“With nature’s colours changing all around us and nights getting darker much earlier our attention turns to making home the most relaxed it can be and we all know that welcoming scents play a big part in that.

“Try mixing a few different winter fragrances for maximum scent throw and make sure they complement each other. Winter fruits and spices go well together - Orange Pomander and Hollyberry and Clove or Cinnamon Spice and Oriental Fig whereas Coconut and Cinnamon won’t work.

“Keep your favourite fragrance for the lounge because that’s where you spend most of your time, either entertaining guests or relaxing alone. Our most popular scent - Amber Noir - is perfect for this.

“Having a candle or diffuser in your hall where you welcome guests or the first place you smell when you come home after a hard day is a great idea. If you have a big hall then you should opt for a dominating scent like Orange Pomander or Hollyberry and Clove.

“The larger or colder a room the more candles and diffusers it requires - try lighting a few larger scented candles like pillar candles or multi-wicks and opening a couple of diffusers. A couple of scented tealights will not do.”

Try Shearer Candles Red Red Rose Robert Burns Chalice, £25, a beautifully scented uplifting floral to fragrance a lounge or large hall. The multi-wick candle burns for 40 hours and the smoked glass container is a stylish addition to any room setting.

Burn the Arran Aromatics Perfumer Collection Ultimate Fig Candle, £20, for a wonderfully rich, sweet scent. The blend of fig with cassis and woody cedar is a grown-up fruity fragrance that belies the very affordable price tag.

A blend of white neroli, mimosa and lemon, spritz the Neom Happiness Home Mist, £18, into the air or onto cushions and linen for a bright and breezy scent. Made with seven of the purest essential oils, it has a clean scent that is a million miles away from some of the chemically created fragrances on the market.
