A SUSPECT has been arrested after a young man was allegedly raped in Glasgow.

The 18-year-old alleged victim told police he was attacked on Monday in the Maryhill area of the city.

Detectives began an investigation and a 46-year-old man was arrested on Thursday.

The Evening Times understands police swooped on the suspect in a Maryhill street.

He is currently detained in custody and is expected to appear in court exactly a week after the alleged attack.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed an arrest had been made in connection with the incident which is alleged to have taken place on Monday October 5.

She said: "We can confirm a 46-year-old man has been arrested and is currently detained in police custody in connection with an alleged serious sexual assault on an 18-year-old man."

The 46-year-old is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Recent figures revealed sexual crime recorded by police in Scotland increased by more than 9% last year.

There were 1797 rapes recorded last year, an increase of 91 compared to the previous 12 months.

Police said around 40% of those reports were historic.
