FURIOUS residents have slammed plans for a hotel which would "destroy Glasgow's skyline".

Developers Forrest Hotels Ltd have submitted a planning application to build an nine-floor luxury hotel with roofop bar next to the city's entertainment quarter.

The site at 200 Finnieston Street would house a 176 room four star hotel if plans were given the green light.

The facility would have eight floors, with 22 rooms on each, as well as a plush roof top area complete with a gym, function suite and bar.

Residents living nearby say they do not object to the development, but the height of the proposed building would obscure their view and destroy the city's skyline.

They have launched a petition, signed by almost 500 people, calling for the council's Planning Applications Committee to "block the monstrous hotel looming twice the height over the Rotunda."

Pam Milne, who started the petition, lives at nearby Lancefield Quay and said: "We were notified and we have 28 days to put in objections but I didn't think it was giving anybody in Glasgow any idea what was going on.

"A lot of people really love iconic Glasgow skyline, whereby you have the silhouette of the Finnieston crane, the heritage of the rotunda and the Hydro in the background.

"You see it from a lot of places - Govan, the squinty bridge, the University.

"The plans we have seen will really obstruct those beautiful buildings and it would be a shame to ruin that view that we have.

"There are a lot of people who travel down to that area.

"The council has created a fantastic area down there and it would be a shame to spoil that."

Locals are also concerned about traffic congestion in the area and the development blocking light coming in to their homes.

Bob Wallace, chairman of the Residents' Association at Lancefield Quay said: "We are in favour of the ground being developed and jobs being created by a hotel development but we are totally opposed to a development that hides the rotunda, is higher than the rotunda and hides the Hydro.

"The skyline would be completely changed. There is an acceptance that a four-storey building, which would take it to the height of the Rotunda, is good.

"There's a great entertainment area here which the proposal will totally block out for people coming along Lancefield Quay and down Finnieston Street.

"We've always accepted that site would be developed, we just want it developed appropriately."

A spokesman for the council said: "It is inappropriate to comment on any planning application prior to it being considered by the Planning Committee.

"The public consultation on the application for a hotel at the site formerly known as 200 Finnieston Street is scheduled to remain open until Monday, October 26.

"The Planning Committee will consider this application in due course."
