A WOMAN is in a critical condition in hospital after a car crashed into a wall.

A silver Vauxhall Astra crashed into a wall on Commonhead Street in Airdrie around 6.20am today.

It is thought the vehicle was asked to stop by police in a marked car on nearby Glenmavis Road, shortly before the accident.

The 30-year-old female passenger in the car was taken to Monklands hospital with serious injuries, and was later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Medics are now describing her condition as critical.

The car's 33-year-old driver received minor injuries and was also taken to Monklands for treatment.

A series of road closures have been put in place around Commonhead Street and Glenmavis Road, with only local access being allowed.
