PLANS to immortalise former Celtic captain Billy McNeill with a statue outside Celtic Park have taken a step forward.

The council is set to debate the proposals next month after the club filed for planning permission to erect a bronze effigy on Celtic Way outside the stadium in the east end.

First announced in April, the work by sculptor John McKenna will stand on a granite plinth and was expected to be unveiled in autumn.

However, the club confirmed that the design has still to be completed.

The statue proposal in the planning document depicts the moment McNeill hoisted the 1967 European Cup as the first British team captain to win the league with the Lisbon Lions.
