A PROBE has been launched after 50 cars were set alight in an afternoon scrapyard blaze.

Emergency crews received reports of a fire at a scrapyard on Renfrew's Meadowside Street around 1pm today.

Three fire engines rushed from Renfrew, Paisley and Govan to tackle to blaze, and managed to extinguish the flames before 2pm.

They are currently working to dampen down the site, after the 50 vehicles were set on fire.

Shocked locals took to social media to report seeing thick black plumes of smoke rising from the scene.

A fire service spokesman said: 2 Around 1pm we received reports of a fire at a scrapyard in Renfrew.

"Several vehicles are understood to be on fire at Meadowside Street.

"Three fire engines from Renfrew, Paisley and Govan arrived at the scene in around 7 minutes".

A police spokesman said: "The police and fire service responded to reports of a fire at a business premises at Meadowside street in Renfrew.

"There are no reports of injuries.

"A joint investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident."
