THE stage is set for Glasgow to welcome one of the biggest global sporting events: the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships.

The thrilling action will take place over 10 days at the SSE Hydro from Friday.

A record 615 gymnasts from 91 countries will compete – the most high profile sporting event to be held in Scotland since the 2014 Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup last year.

The SSE Hydro has been dramatically transformed in a bid to take the spectator experience to dizzying new heights.

Highlights include the "Mega Wall" which comprises a series of LED screens standing a colossal six metres high and 20 metres long.

This will display athlete information, the latest social media interactions, national flags, promotional videos and messages from sponsors.

It is the largest structure of its kind to be constructed at the SSE Hydro and a first for the World Gymnastics Championships.

There is also retractable “Premium Floor” seating – another first in the world of gymnastics – which allows fans to come eye-to-eye with their favourite gymnasts as the competition unfolds.

Up to 400 spectators each day will be treated to this unique experience.

Ticket sales for the event have already passed the 50,000 mark.

Colin Hartley, director of the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships, said: “From the outset of our bid, we have been committed to taking the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships to the next level and we have worked closely with FIG and British Gymnastics to implement a number of exciting innovations which we believe will enhance both the competitor and spectator experience.”
