GREAT Britain’s Claudia Fragapane celebrated her 18th birthday in style at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow – with coffee and cake.

Any stronger celebratory tipple will need to remain on ice for the time being with Claudia and her British team-mates hoping to claim a spot in the team final which takes place at the SSE Hydro on Tuesday evening.

The Bristol-based gymnast was presented with a birthday cake by Daisy Morby, 11, a member of Auchterarder Gymnastics Club, on behalf of event organisers.

Earlier in the day, Claudia's team-mates – sisters Becky and Ellie Downie, Ruby Harrold, Kelly Simm and Amy Tinkler – filled her hotel room with balloons.

The British women also repurposed the athletic tape typically used for strapping wrists and ankles to spell out: “Claudia” and “18” on the door of her room.

“It is a really special day and I’m happy I get to spend it with all of my teammates,” said Claudia. “I have to postpone my celebrations for the moment – but just until the end of the championships.

“I’ll probably go out for a nice meal with my friends at home and enjoy each other’s company. You do have to give up certain privileges when you’re an athlete, but I like to have a nice sit-down meal with my friends and family. I think that is really memorable."

The Great Britain women will find out by later this evening if they have made the team finals.

The four-time Commonwealth Games champion added: “It’s great to be looking at potentially qualifying for the Olympics on my birthday. We’re just really hoping to stay in that top eight as a team.”
