SIX-time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy is among a raft of big sporting names to voice their support as Great Britain continues its quest for medals at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.

After winning a historic silver team medal on Wednesday, Scotland’s Daniel Purvis will be back in action at the SSE Hydro this evening.

Daniel, 24, will be joined by British team-mate Max Whitlock in the men’s individual all-around final.

On Tuesday the Great Britain women won team bronze.

“It is great to see the team get off to such a great start with two medals but there is still so much at stake,” said Sir Chris.

“Home support can make the world of difference and I know the Glasgow crowd will get right behind the British men. It is going to be an incredible night.”

Commonwealth Games gold medallists Kimberley Renicks and Steve Frew also passed on messages of support.

Coatbridge-based judo player Kimberley, who took gold at Glasgow 2014, said: “When you walk out there and hear the noise of a home crowd it pushes you that extra bit further and gives you that extra motivation,” she said.

“I know it is the same for the gymnasts.”

Steve Frew, who won Scotland’s first ever gymnastics Commonwealth Games gold medal back in 2002, has been watching all of the action live.

“It has been really special,” he said. “For the men to take a historic silver medal was something else.

"I know what it is like to go out there at a home Games – the wave of energy that you get from crowd really inspires you and that’s what we want to see again tonight.”

Glasgow Warriors head coach, Gregor Townsend, said he too knew from experience just how vital that home backing is.

“I’m sure the Glasgow fans will come out in large numbers and roar the British guys on,” he said.

“It can make the world of difference when you’re out on the field of play knowing the crowd is with you. Good luck to everyone, especially the British gymnasts.”

Earlier in the week Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: “Good luck to all of the British team at the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow this week.

"Looking forward to the Rio Olympics next year.”

Councillor Frank McAveety, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We have already witnessed some world-class performances from the British teams and with the support of the famous Glasgow fans I know they can keep that going in the all-around final.”
