PUB revellers battled to save a young man killed in a horror road smash outside a busy bar.

Kyle McCusker, 28, died after his car ploughed into traffic lights and a bus stop, before flipping on to its roof and crashing into a parked car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene in Main Street, in Holytown, Lanarkshire early yesterday morning.

Police said people who were in a nearby pub, The White House, raced into the street to help.

It is understood pub customers and staff tried to help Kyle, who had been driving his black Ford Mondeo, at around 12.35am.

However, their efforts were in vain and Kyle, from New Stevenston, passed away at the roadside.

Constable Craig Martin, from the road policing department at Motherwell, is appealing for information.

He said: "After colliding with a traffic light pole and a bus stop pole, the car overturned and hit a grey Vauxhall Corsa which was parked outside a nearby pub, The White House.

"We have spoken to a number of people from the pub who came out to help.

"But would also appeal to anyone who witnessed the crash, who has not already come forward, to contact officers at the road policing department at Motherwell on 101."

Police confirmed a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Meanwhile, investigations are continuing after a man died when his car crashed into a bus in Ayrshire on Saturday morning.

The crash, involving a Stagecoach bus and a Mercedes car, took place near Hunterston roundabout at Fairlie, at around 10.10am.

Police said the 53-year-old driver of the car died at the scene.

The 60-year-old bus driver and nine passengers were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Yesterday, police revealed the bus driver and a 69-year-old female passenger were being treated for head injuries in Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Medical staff described their condition as "serious".
