CITY cops have vowed to rally round an off-duty officer who is fighting for his life in hospital.

Mystery surrounds how Gerard Kelly, 26, was left with serious injuries after a night out in St Andrews, Fife.

The beat cop, who works in Clarkston, East Renfrewshire, was found in a street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He is now in a coma, battling severe head and neck injuries.

Police in St Andrews are probing whether Gerard, from East Kilbride, was involved in an accident while on a stag night with pals.

However, his colleagues in the Greater Glasgow division have vowed to "do what they can".

A source told the Evening Times: "Although we are not involved in the investigation, we will do everything we can for PC Kelly.

"He's a lovely guy."

PC Kelly remains in a coma at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed an injured man had been found in Rose Lane at around 2am on Sunday.

"He added: "The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, where he continues to be treated.

"Inquires into how the man came about his injuries are ongoing."

Anyone with information about the incident should phone 101 or Crimestoppers.
