A 14-screen cinema is to open as part of a £20million extension to Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow.

Centre owner Hammerson has announced further details of a 10,700 sq metre extension of the shopping destination.

The Evening Times revealed in February that, Hammerson and its joint venture partner, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, had received planning permission for the scheme. It will open in spring 2015.

In addition to the Cineworld cinema, the development is expected to include nine new restaurants and a Gala Bingo.

Work on the extension – expected to create 350 jobs – begins this year, with the restaurants opening in autumn 2014.

Martin Plocica, director of UK shopping centres for Hammerson, said: "Pressing the button on delivering this leisure-based scheme is great news for Silverburn.

"The extension reinforces Silverburn's regional presence.

"We will be offering customers an exciting line-up of high quality leisure uses that complements perfectly our extensive, well-established fashion and lifestyle shopping."

Steve Wiener, chief executive of Cine-UK, said: "We want to be the major cinema brand in Scotland, and Silverburn allows us to achieve that objective in the Glasgow region.

"The centre attracts a significant number of cinema-going consumers, who are drawn to the centre due to its quality, offer and location, none of which are matched by other locations in the region."

David Pierotti, Silverburn centre manager, said: "The Cineworld complex will be a very welcome addition to Silverburn's already successful and growing leisure offer, which will be furthered by the additional restaurant offer following the development.

"The development will bring an exciting time and I am sure will prove popular with our current and new customers.

"It will build upon Silverburn's appeal as Scotland's top destination for shopping and leisure."

Silverburn opened six years at a cost of £350m. The mall now employs more than 2000 staff.

Hammerson has also said a 5000 sq metre extension to Abbotsinch Retail Park, Paisley, which it acquired last October, is also due to start soon, with five new units being built.
