DECK the halls with sparkling metallics is you want to have the best-dressed home this Christmas.

That’s the message from Isabelle Greenwood, the interiors and home furnishings buyer for Sterling, who recommends glamorous festive decorations that sparkle and shine.

The key theme for interiors this season is a magical mix of metallics, featuring copper and gold.

“We’ve gone completely over the top,” laughs Isabelle. "Copper and gold make for a warm, glitzy look. People could go with one or the other – copper looks good with brown leather sofas and a more earthy colour palette.

“Whereas others might be happier with the gold because they already it in their colour scheme. Or you could go the whole hog – if you already have gold decks for your room, select a few copper pieces to sit alongside them and that would bring the gold up to date.

“Decadent golds, cool coppers and more demure bronzes all bring warmth to a room, as well as drama and opulence.

“High gloss metallic finishes draw the eye and bounce the light around which is particularly good when you’re adding in lots of wee twinkly fairy lights.

“Copper has a beautiful warming glow, which can quickly transform a bland colder space into a more warm, inviting home.”

If bling is not your thing, Isabelle suggests using wool or fur throws to add texture.

The store has reindeer skins as well as sheepskins in greys and taupes that can be layered up on sofas and chairs to keep winter chills at bay.

For fans of silver, Isabelle suggests teaming it with white and a hint of amethyst. This colour combination works particularly well in modern homes with silver finishes on doors and curtain poles.

“We have fantastic clip-on frosted roses in amethyst which are fab on a tree and a real alternative to baubles,” suggests Isabelle.

“And beautiful hanging tassels which also look good on a door handle or the drawers of a unit.

“This look is great with glass and we have tons of lovely, very inexpensive glass pieces. You could create a tablescape, almost like a Christmas still life on your dining table, or on a side board or a console table, using varying sizes of glass vases and bowls.

“We have lovely bonbon jars with high lids, we have flat ones and a pedestal bowl - pile them up with baubles to exaggerate the shapes and heights of these glass pieces and intersperse them with lit candles. It makes a really stunning focal point.”
