COMEDIAN Frankie Boyle is coming to Scotland to headline a comedy gala organised by actor Martin Compston.

The Greenock Telegraph reports that the former Mock the Week TV show star will perform at the Greenock town hall on Friday 18 December alongside fellow funnymen Gary Little, Scott Gibson and, compere for the evening, Hardeep Singh Kohli.

The event is being organised by Sweet Sixteen star Martin Compston in aid of Ardgowan Hospice, of which he is a patron.

He said: “I’m really chuffed with the line-up and the boys have all been really nice.

“Frankie is giving up his time for absolutely nothing, which is fantastic from him, he’s not even taking expenses — not a penny.

“It’s a comedy gala night and he’ll headline it but we’ve also got Scott Gibson, a brilliant Scottish comic who supports Frankie at lots of his gigs and has also started comedy nights in The Albany.

“Big Gary Little is absolutely brilliant and I’ve seen him a few times in the past — he’s one of Kevin Bridges’ favourite comics.

“We’ve also got Hardeep Singh Kohli compering it for us.

“We want to make it a cracking night as well as raising loads of money for the hospice.”

The comedy night follows on from a charity concert arranged by Compston at the same venue last year, when Scottish rockers The View played to a packed crowd and helped raise £10,000.

And, this year’s comedy extravaganza has been put together with help from Greenock DJ and promoter Andrew ‘McD’ McDermid.

Compston says he hopes it will raise lots more money for the hospice, a cause close to his heart after his late uncle was cared for there.

“Last year’s gig was great and we got to raise £10,000 for the hospice, which was just amazing.

“It was a steep learning curve for me in terms of putting things on — I just thought I’d get the boys, who are my friends, get a stage and do a gig.

“But in terms of PA and lighting systems and equipment it turns out it’s not cheap.

“It was a brilliant night and something I’ll never forget — I never thought I’d see a mosh pit at a hospice gig, so that was pretty amazing!

“This year I was thinking of how to maximise the money for the hospice and wanted to make it a bit more simple. I thought if you’ve got comedians on then it’s basically just them and a mic.”

Despite his connections in the film and TV industry, he took a punt by asking comedy A-lister Boyle to take part — and it paid off.

Compston added: “I’m a huge fan of Frankie’s and I just chanced my arm. He agreed and he’s been nothing but helpful since, all the boys have been great.

“I’m trying to make it an annual thing for the hospice on the last Friday before Christmas, because people have knocked off work and can have a good night and kick-off the festive period.

“It’s a charity night but you’ve got to give people their money’s worth and make sure they come and enjoy themselves.

“I’m lucky to have McD supporting me because he’s done a helluva lot of stuff helping to pull it together.

“We want to make it a cracking night as well as raising loads of money.

“Every single penny raised will go to the hospice. They have first-class staff and it’s an important part of our community.”
