GLASGOW will welcome some of Scotland’s biggest stars of film and television as the city hosts the Scottish Baftas.

The awards, which honour the very best talent, will be hosted by Edith Bowman at the Radisson Blu hotel tomorrow night.

Robert Carlyle’s directorial debut, The Legend of Barney Thomson, leads the way at the awards this year, receiving four nominations, including best actor, best director and best feature film. It is closely followed by the BBC adaptation of Ian Banks’ Stonemouth, which has three nominations.

The Legend of Barney Thomson is joined in the best feature film category by 16 Years Till Summer and What We Did On Our Holiday, a comedy written by Outnumbered’s Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkins and starring Billy Connolly and former Dr Who actor David Tennant. Stonemouth will compete against the Glasgow Girls and Shetland in the best television drama category.

In the best actress television category, Doctor Who star Michelle Gomez will take on My Mad Fat Diary’s Sharon Rooney and Stonemouth’s Charlotte Spencer.

Ken Stott, Peter Mullan and Mark Bonnar will battle it out for the best television actor award, while Robert Carlyle, David Elliot and David Tennant are in the running in the best film actor category.

Elena Anaya, Elizabeth McGovern and Emma Thompson will compete for the best actress film award. Still Game will go up against Mrs Brown’s Boys and Celtic Connections Opening Concert: Martyn Bennett’s Grit in the comedy/entertainment programme category, while Katie Morag, The Dog Ate My Homework and Teacup Travels are all nominated for the Children’s Programme award.

Doctor Who supremo Steven Moffat is shortlisted for best writer film/television alongside ‘71’s Gregory Burke and Scrotal Recall’s Tom Edge.

This year’s outstanding achievement awards will be given to Bill Paterson, Dorothy Byrne of Channel Four news and prop designer David Balfour.

Paterson, whose career spans more than 50 years, said: “It was tremendous and entirely unexpected to be told I was to receive such a prestigious award.

“I’m delighted and looking forward to a wonderful evening – thank you so much to BAFTA Scotland for such an incredible honour.”
