A MAN was carried for almost 100 yards on a car roof during a horror road smash.

The 47-year-old was left seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in the Merchant City.

He was struck as he stepped off the pavement in Glassford Street, in the city centre, and tried to cross the road at around 3am on Saturday.

Sources said he was thrown up onto the bonnet of the car in the force of the collision and then carried along the road before he was flung off.

He suffered a serious head injury and broken bones.

The Evening Times understands his shoes were found around 300 yards away in Stockwell Street.

Police said the 24-year-old motorist, who is alleged to have driven off without stopping, has been reported to the procurator fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Officers responded to reports of a road traffic incident in Glassford Street, in Glasgow, at around 3am on Saturday November 14.

"A 47-year-old man was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"A 24-year-old male has been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with alleged road traffic offences."

The driver is understood to have attended a nearby police station shortly after the incident.

Eyewitnesses reported a large police presence in the area and the road was closed until around 6.45am, while investigations were carried out.
